Background of the Study
Cultural beliefs play a significant role in shaping health behaviors and the acceptance of healthcare services, particularly in maternal and child health. In Taraba State, a diverse region with various ethnic groups, cultural beliefs and practices surrounding childbirth often influence women’s decisions regarding the use of midwifery services. Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) and other non-medical methods of childbirth continue to be preferred by many women in rural and semi-urban areas due to cultural beliefs, trust, and historical practices (Olayemi et al., 2024).
Midwifery services, though recognized as essential for improving maternal health outcomes, often face resistance due to concerns about medicalization, fear of unfamiliar procedures, or perceived disrespect for traditional customs. These beliefs can affect women’s utilization of trained midwives and, in turn, hinder progress in reducing maternal mortality and morbidity. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of understanding cultural factors in promoting the acceptance of healthcare services, particularly in rural regions (Durojaiye et al., 2023). This study will explore the influence of cultural beliefs on the acceptance of midwifery services in Taraba State, with the goal of identifying strategies to improve maternal healthcare by aligning midwifery practices with cultural values.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the global push for professional midwifery care to reduce maternal mortality, cultural beliefs in Taraba State continue to influence women’s healthcare choices, including the use of midwifery services. Traditional beliefs about childbirth, fear of hospitals, and preference for TBAs often result in delayed or inadequate maternal care, increasing the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery. This study seeks to understand how cultural beliefs shape women’s acceptance or rejection of midwifery services and to propose strategies for integrating cultural sensitivity into midwifery practices.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the cultural beliefs influencing the acceptance of midwifery services among women in Taraba State.
2. To assess the impact of cultural beliefs on the utilization of midwifery services in rural and urban areas of Taraba State.
3. To propose strategies for improving the acceptance of midwifery services through culturally sensitive approaches.
Research Questions
1. What are the cultural beliefs that influence women’s decisions to seek or avoid midwifery services in Taraba State?
2. How do these cultural beliefs affect the utilization of midwifery services in rural and urban areas of Taraba State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to promote the acceptance of midwifery services while respecting cultural beliefs in Taraba State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Cultural beliefs significantly influence the acceptance of midwifery services among women in Taraba State.
2. Women in rural areas are more likely to prefer traditional birth attendants over midwives due to cultural beliefs.
3. Culturally sensitive approaches to midwifery care will increase the acceptance of professional services in Taraba State.
